Meet the coach.
I am interested in deep listening to other people. The kind of listening that is active and formative. I am also interested in seeing change happen. Positive change. These two interests first led to a bachelor’s degree in psychology at Beloit College in Wisconsin. Psychology then combined with my passion for having an impact on the big world and my curiosity about how things work and led to my first career: Midwifery. I went to a midwifery school in El Paso, Texas and have attended over 100 home and clinic births in Texas, Washington DC, Illinois, Washington State, and Wisconsin. After taking some time off to raise my daughter, I returned to school to pursue a Master’s Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy. My therapy practice was grounded in my conviction that no individual is an island and that we all live as part of human relationship networks. I worked in the public sector as a therapist, seeing clients in a county run mental health clinic. During those years I also worked for a regional medical clinic doing out-patient mental health counseling. I became involved in Critical Incident Stress Debriefing and co-led a five county consortium in setting up and training a Debriefing Team. However, the world of psychotherapy seemed to me to be increasingly dominated by influences more interested in the financial bottom line than in helping people. And, I felt more and more that I wanted to do work that focused on solutions rather than problems. I hung up my therapy hat in 2000 and have been coaching since January of 2001.
The biggest part of my non-coaching yet professional life has to do with dance and music. I co-founded (with my husband) an old time string band and am a dance caller for that band. The band celebrated its 16th anniversary in 2005. To check us out, go to http://kevinmcmullin.com/ and click on Ducks. In addition, we founded and continue to run a weekend long family dance camp. This camp celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2004. To check out our camp, go to http://kevinmcmullin.com/ and click on Dance Camp.
Interested in my family life? My nuclear family is one adult daughter, one husband (of 25 years in 2005), one dog and one cat. I am a first generation American on one side and second on the other. I have lived in the Midwest for most of my life, with significant time spent in Washington State and briefer stints in Washington DC and Texas. I currently live in my dream location in northern Wisconsin. 53 acres of pine and mixed hardwood forest, lake, and open field. Out my window is an eagle’s nest, lots of deer, occasional bear, fox, and other assorted wild life. Loving my family, coaching, dancing, living where I live and with whom—these are the passions of my life! |
